Welcoming a new baby into the family is such a special time — and including big brothers and sisters in your newborn session makes those memories even more meaningful. As a Wallingford CT newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I hear from parents (especially with three newborn sessions on my calendar this week!) is:
“How will my toddler do during the session?”
The good news? With a little preparation and the right guidance, sibling newborn photos can be smooth, relaxed, and absolutely beautiful.

Should Siblings Come to the Newborn Session?
Absolutely! Family and sibling images are such an important part of telling your baby’s story.
I offer three newborn collections — Petite, Classic, and Signature — and family and sibling photos are included in all of my collections. You never have to worry about adding that on later.
My goal as your newborn photographer in Wallingford CT is always to create a calm, low-pressure environment where everyone (yes, even busy toddlers!) can shine.

My Recommended Timing for Siblings
When siblings are involved, I do always suggest having them brought along about an hour or so after our start time.
Why this works so well for newborn photos with siblings:
- Toddlers don’t have to sit and wait
- We can focus on baby first
- Sibling photos happen when everyone is fresh
- Parents feel much less stressed
Once we finish sibling and family images, many families choose to have another adult take the older child home or out for a special treat while we complete baby’s individual setups.

That said — flexibility is key. If siblings come along with baby at the start of the session, I simply adjust my workflow. Every baby and every newborn session in Wallingford CT is different, and I always work with what makes the most sense for your family.

How to Prepare Toddlers Before the Session
A little prep goes a long way! Here are my best parent-tested tips for stress-free toddler and newborn photos:
✔ Prioritize naps
A well-rested toddler is everything.
✔ Keep expectations light
Instead of saying “You have to smile,” try:
“We’re going to take some pictures with the baby!”
✔ Bring a small snack
Nothing messy — just something quick if they need a boost.
✔ Choose comfortable outfits
Simple, neutral clothing photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on connection during your family newborn session.

What to Expect During Sibling Photos
One thing I always remind parents:
Every baby and every session is different.
Newborn sessions are fully baby-led. As an experienced Connecticut newborn photographer, I follow your little one’s cues and adjust the flow of the session as needed. Because of this, flexibility and patience are built into my process.
When it’s time for sibling images:
- I guide posing safely and naturally
- I keep things moving efficiently
- I use a relaxed, child-friendly approach
- I never force a moment that isn’t working
Some toddlers jump right in… others need a minute to warm up — and both are completely normal.

When It’s Okay for Siblings to Take a Break
Here’s something many parents are relieved to hear:
It’s okay if your toddler needs breaks.
Your newborn photography session in Wallingford CT is never rushed, and I always build in space for real life to happen. My job is to create a calm experience where you don’t feel stressed if your older child needs a moment.
In fact, some of the sweetest sibling newborn photos happen when we simply let kids be themselves.

Booking Your Newborn Session
Because newborn sessions are best scheduled within the first few weeks after baby arrives, I always recommend booking during your pregnancy to ensure availability.
If you’re expecting and would love a relaxed, baby-led newborn experience (with beautiful sibling moments included), I’d love to chat and help you choose between my Petite, Classic, or Signature collections.
