There are some moments in life that remind me exactly why I love what I do. Last Saturday, July 18th, I had the incredible honor of capturing one of those unforgettable moments—a surprise proposal at Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford, Connecticut.
When Tom first reached out about photographing his proposal to his girlfriend, Joelle, there was no way I could say no. Tom isn’t just another client—he’s a good friend of my son’s, and years ago I had the privilege of photographing his senior portraits. So even though I had intentionally kept my calendar clear that weekend before leaving for vacation the next day, I knew I had to be there to document such an important milestone in their lives.

If you remember last weekend’s weather here in Connecticut, you’ll remember it was anything but predictable. Between the smoke from the Canadian wildfires lingering in the air and the constant threat of thunderstorms, we were all refreshing the weather forecast every few minutes, hoping Mother Nature would cooperate.

Tom and I had spent time beforehand carefully planning every detail. The original plan was for him and Joelle to spend the day at the beach in Rhode Island before making their way to Gouveia Vineyards later that afternoon.

To keep the proposal a surprise, I recruited a friend and her daughter to act as my “clients” while I pretended to photograph them in the vineyard. Since I’ve known Tom for years, the plan was simple. He would casually walk over to say hello, and I’d naturally respond with something like, “You two look so nice today! Would you mind if I grabbed a few photos of you as well?”

From there, I’d guide them through a few poses before getting Joelle into the perfect position for the proposal.
Everything was going exactly as planned.
Until the weather decided to write its own ending.
Just five minutes before they arrived, the skies were calm. As Tom and Joelle walked over, I snapped the very first photo—and immediately felt the first few raindrops.
Within seconds, I knew we didn’t have time for the poses we had planned. Looking at the sky, I could tell a downpour was moments away.

Thinking quickly, I had them stand back-to-back and take one step apart.
And then it happened.
The sky completely opened up.
Rain came pouring down around us as Tom got down on one knee and asked Joelle to marry him.
Honestly, it felt like something straight out of The Notebook.

Instead of ruining the moment, the rain made it even more magical. The emotion, the excitement, the surprise, and the sheer joy on their faces created some of the most beautiful, genuine images. Sometimes the moments we can’t plan become the ones we’ll treasure forever.
As quickly as the heavy rain arrived, it eased up enough to give us about twenty minutes to wander through the vineyard and capture newly engaged portraits among the vines. The dramatic skies and fresh summer rain created the most romantic backdrop imaginable.

After our time outside, we headed into the winery where family and friends had been waiting to celebrate the newly engaged couple. Seeing Joelle’s excitement as she realized everyone she loved was there to celebrate with them made the day even more special.

Tom, thank you for trusting me with such an important chapter in your lives. It truly meant the world to be asked to capture this incredible surprise. Watching two people begin their next adventure together is one of the greatest honors of my job, and I couldn’t be happier for both of you.

Congratulations, Tom and Joelle! Tom, it has been such a joy watching you grow from the young man whose senior portraits I photographed to now beginning this exciting new chapter with Joelle. Thank you for trusting me to capture one of the biggest moments of your lives. It was truly an honor, and I wish you both a lifetime filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures together.
